tattoos, part III: the anchor.

It took more than ten years until I was brave enough to get another tattoo.

That didn't mean I hadn't been thinking about it, though.

I'd had so many ideas over the years. I had just gotten gun-shy especially after the disaster of my last tattoo - not just how horribly it turned out, but the terrible pain.

When I finally decided on another tattoo in February 2018, it would be no bigger than the size of a dime. It was to go on my left wrist, too - the most visible of my tattoos up to that point.

It was to be an anchor to represent the water and how much it means to my family and me. Perfect and cute, right?

I also did my research when it came to tattoo parlors, as I wasn't about to make the same mistake a third time. I was going somewhere reputable, damn it. I chose Vishnu Bunny, a long-established shop in downtown Sioux Falls. This, with the exception of one, would be where I would get all my other tattoos going forward.

When I told the artist what I wanted, he did his best to convince me to get the anchor a little bigger. "It's going to bleed together in a few years," he said. I was unconvinced. Another hard lesson learned: listen to your tattoo artist.

I got the teeny tiny tattoo, and it was perfect. Exactly what I wanted.

For a few years.

And then it bled together... just like he said it would.

Friends, always listen to your tattoo artist. They know best.
