songs for Halloween: updated edition.

I have been waiting all year for Halloween. IT'S FINALLY HERE.

A few years ago, I wrote about the best songs for Halloween. It's time for an update! I present my favourite songs to listen to on Halloween.

  "This Is Halloween"

the Citizens of Halloweentown

If you listen to ONE song for Halloween, it's got to be this one. It's from The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is technically a Christmas movie... but it begins with the citizens of Halloweentown celebrating Halloween.

"Werewolves of London"

Warren Zevon

If you listen to TWO songs for Halloween... well, you know. You can't help but go "ah-hoo0oooooooo" right along with Warren Zevon. Also, it's super clever. My favourite line: "I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's/his hair was perfect."

"Thriller"

Michael Jackson

This is an obvious one. It is THE zombie song, after all. Who here hasn't attempted the Thriller dance? Plus, it's got that awesome Vincent Price voiceover.

"I Put a Spell on You"

Bette Midler

Hocus Pocus is the best Halloween movie of all time. It just is. One of the highlights is Bette Midler (as Winifred Sanderson) singing "I Put a Spell on You" at a Halloween party and hypnotizing all the adults. The Creedence Clearwater Revival version is also worth a listen.

 "Witch Doctor"

Alvin and the Chipmunks

Alvin and the Chipmunks are better known for their Christmas songs, but this is a worthy addition to Halloween. Plus, that bass sax is out of control.

"Monster Mash"

Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers

It's certainly not Halloween without hearing "Monster Mash" at least once. Is it the original Halloween song? Possibly.

"Dead Man's Party"

Oingo Boingo

Fun fact: Danny Elfman is the lead singer of Oingo Boingo. Danny Elfman is perhaps better known as the composer to most of Tim Burton's films, including The Nightmare Before Christmas. Danny Elfman ALSO provides Jack Skellington's singing voice. Anyway, this song is so danceable and about going to a party full of dead people. Very Halloween.

"Somebody's Watching Me"

Rockwell

This is a classic 80s song, even though who knows what has become of Rockwell. This song is famous because of Michael Jackson singing the chorus. You can't help but look over your shoulder!

"Re: Your Brains"

Jonathan Coulton

I really don't know who Jonathan Coulton is - I just love this song. It's about zombies in an office, and it's framed like a work meeting. So good.

"Don't Stop Me Now"

Queen

Ok, so I do have to qualify this song. It is probably only a Halloween song if you've seen Shaun of the Dead. Shaun of the Dead is a hilarious movie about zombies, and there's this amazing scene where the heroes are all beating up zombies while this song plays in the background. They do it in time to the song, and it's like a beautiful choreographed dance... for bludgeoning zombies.

"The Time Warp"

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Last, but very much not least, I bring you "The Time Warp." Of course, Rocky Horror is the ultimate Halloween cult film. I've been to a handful of midnight showings, and they are truly fantastic. Of course, everyone stands up and does "The Time Warp." And EVERYONE can do it, as the song itself provides instructions. After all, it's just a jump to the left.

I hope you all have a fun and spoooooooooky Halloween!

dear Tom Daschle.

Dear Tom Daschle,

You probably don't remember me.

In fact, I hope you don't.

You came to Arlington, South Dakota when I was a junior in high school.

You visited my English class.

I was 16.

I thought I was a Republican.

Turns out, I had no idea what that meant.

I thought I was a Republican because my grandma Lorraine was a Republican.

Did I know what she stood for?

Not really.

I knew that Grandma Lorraine loved her family more than anything, and she was a badass woman in a time where women stayed home.

So if Republicans were good enough for her, they were good enough for me.

So, Tom Daschle, that's why I glared at you when you visited our classroom.

That's why I didn't have any questions to ask you.

I have so many questions for you now.

I'm sorry I swooned over John Thune when he visited the following year.

He signed a piece of notebook paper that used to hang on my wall.

I have since burned it.

I'm sorry I wore my "Thune!" shirt so often.

I have since trashed it.

I am NOT sorry that all photographic evidence of this shirt has been destroyed.

But don't worry, Tom Daschle.

I had this all figured out by the time I was old enough to vote.

I'm sorry I was never old enough to vote for you.

Because I would have.

Thanks for all you did for my home state of South Dakota. Thanks for all you did for our country.

Thanks for everything, Tom Daschle.

top ten songs: AJR.

Today's "top ten songs" topic is a band called AJR. AJR is made up of three brothers: Adam, Jack, and Ryan. (I feel the need to tell you this because I didn't actually know that until I looked it up.) The eldest of these three brothers was born in 1990, which makes me feel super old.

I've only known about this band since summer 2018, and they made their way very quickly into my heart/iTunes. James and I first really listened to them when we took a short trip to Bemidji, and I fell hard. A central theme of many of AJR's songs is the feeling of not being good enough and a fear of having to truly grow up. Those ideas speak to me, just like the themes of loneliness and a sense of not belonging used by the Killers and Twenty-One Pilots.

Anyway. Here are my ten favourite AJR songs. I hope you find something you like.

Sober Up

I really like having a song to pinpoint when I look back on my favourite bands. "Sober Up" was the first song of AJR's I ever heard. Where? Who knows. I don't listen to much radio besides NPR, so it wasn't on the radio. Probably Pandora. Doesn't matter. "Sober Up" is about a feeling of numbness and some depression that can come with getting older. "I just wanna feel something again," they sing. It's also about feigning happiness: "we smile at party time/but soon we forget to smile at anything else." I have definitely felt this in some of my more trying times, and it's comforting to hear it put into words.

My Calling

As far as AJR's albums go, their first one is my least favourite. I don't like the first album as much because it doesn't dive deep into those uncomfortable feelings as the later albums. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have its great songs, and this is one of them. One of the other things I like a lot about AJR is their use of electronics in their music. This song has all sorts of interesting electronic music, and I haven't heard anything like it. Plus, it's catchy as hell.

Come Hang Out

"Come Hang Out" was right up there with "Sober Up" in popularity in summer 2018, so this was the other song I kind of knew. It deals with trying to balance friendship and work. They sing about working so hard on their album and trying to be as successful as possible, all while turning down invitations from their friends to hang out. However, the friends don't seem too supportive: "You haven't gone that far; you can find a real job." Even so, there's a sort of lamentation: "I'll be there next time." Will there be a next time?

Call My Dad

I love this song so much: no matter how old you are, if you need some help, you just want to call your dad. I also really love the echo from the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B": "I feel so broke up/I wanna go home." The singer has had a night partying with his friends, but when it all goes wrong, all he wants to do is call his dad.

Bud Like You

This song is obviously about smoking weed. It's not the lyrics that make this song great; it's the incredibly catchy tune. It's got a weird rhythm and is part drinking-song. You just have to listen to it.

Next Up Forever

"Next Up Forever" is the first song off AJR's newest album. It starts with what sounds like a 1940s men's singing group... you just might have to listen to it for that to make sense. It's about the anticipation leading up to doing something great and how we want to hang onto that. It's about how we are all afraid that we have hit our peak: "I'm kinda scared of graduation/cause who am I when this is done?/I wanna be next up forever/so the best is always yet to come."

100 Bad Days

This song speaks to the very title of my blog: what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Or, in reality, what doesn't kill you will eventually make a good story: "A hundred bad days make a hundred good stories/A hundred good stories make me interesting at parties." Is that not the absolute truth? No one wants to hear about all the wonderful things that have happened to you. They want to hear about how you fell flat on your face. My best stories involve something stupid I did or something terrible happening to me. Thanks to AJR for giving me a theme song.

 Karma

The first thing I need to say is that while I am an atheist, I am a firm believer in karma. Interestingly enough, karma is also a Wiccan belief known as the Rule of Three: whatever energy a person puts out into the world (positive or negative) will be returned to that person three times. So maybe I'm not actually an atheist, but a pagan. I'm getting off track. This song is about how even if you are a good person, karma doesn't always pay you back when you want it to. The song is framed as a conversation with a therapist, asking "I've been so good/why am I feeling empty?" Great question. The very end of the song gets faster and faster and shows the desperation at the end of the session: "You say that I'm better/Why don't I feel better?/The universe works in mysterious ways/But I'm starting to think it ain't working for me."

Dear Winter

"Dear Winter" is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. The narrator is singing to his child, named Winter. It sounds like a dad singing to a newborn about what they would do later in life ("Dear Winter, I hope you like your name"), but you quickly realize Winter doesn't exist: "I'm hoping that someday, I can meet you on this Earth/But shit, I gotta meet your mom first." It's such deep sadness coming from a place of loneliness - will the narrator ever find the woman for him? Will he get to start this family that he so clearly desires? "But Winter, it won't be too long/First I just gotta find your mom."

Don't Throw Out My Legos

The instrumental introduction to this song is absolutely magical. I don't know what it is, but I love it so much. It delights me every single time I hear it. This song focuses the most about growing up and how scary it can be. After we grow up, can we ever truly go home again? The narrator does not want his parents to throw away his old Legos, even though he is moving out: "Can we keep my Legos at home?/Cause I wanna move out/I don't wanna move on." I have not lived with my parents since I was 18, but I still have stuff at home. It's hard to completely leave the nest: "What if I can't let go/What if I come back home?" (Not that I have any plans to move back in, Mom and Dad. Breathe easy.)

On that note about the real struggle of growing up (I'm 33 and I'm not there yet), this is where I leave you. If you want to look back at my ten favourite songs from my other favourite bands, follow the links:

top ten outfits under $35, part XVI.

Here we are with another installation of the cheap outfit saga!

Almost everything you see here will have some element from Poshmark or thredUP. After reading a bit about the horrific effects of the fast fashion industry and the insane amounts of clothes unleashed on Goodwill (that often just get thrown away), I started rethinking my clothing purchases. I am now focusing on purchasing either secondhand or from small businesses - or, in the best case scenarios, both! Poshmark and thredUP are my new best friends in this endeavor, so you'll be seeing those names quite a bit as we go.

If you'd like to check out the previous cheap outfit posts, here they are - going back all the way to 2012!

dress – Poshmark – $35

shoes – DSW – FREE! (buy one pair of sandals, get another free)

cat necklace – gift from Mom and Dad

TOTAL: $35

This dress is the first thing I ever purchased on Poshmark. It is a symbol of a long and beautiful relationship. This dress is so comfortable and flowy, and I feel super fancy but also like I'm wearing pajamas. That's the best kind of outfit. My necklace is hard to see, but it is the teeniest tiniest sweetest cat necklace. Being a cat lady is socially acceptable now, and I love all the cat accessories that have since emerged.

jumpsuit – Maurices – $14.98 (clearance + $5 off)

shoes – Modcloth – $17.99 (clearance + 40% off)

fish bracelet – Etsy/gift from Mom and Dad – about $2

TOTAL: $34.97

Jumpsuits are the miracle I have been waiting for. Maxi dresses make me look pregnant, but I love how simple they are. You only have to pick out one thing to wear, and no shaving of legs or wearing tights required. Jumpsuits are BETTER than maxi dresses - they make me look proportionate (!!!), usually have pockets, and I don't have to shave my legs. You're going to see quite a few jumpsuits on this page. My bracelet is made out of the cutest pink fish charm my parents brought me back from Hawaii circa 1998.

jacket – Poshmark – $9

pants – AE – $25.46 (25% off + 10% off + $15 off)

shoes – DSW – FREE! (were $90, all sorts of coupons/discounts)

earrings – free gift from Etsy shop

TOTAL $34.46

I have a huge thing for bomber jackets, and this is the first one I purchased from Poshmark. This one also has embroidery, for which I have a clear weakness. While I did say I am now focusing on small businesses and secondhand, I may still need to get my pants from American Eagle. They fit me the best, and they have killer sales. Plus, it has been fairly difficult to find secondhand jeans that fit my needs and wants. We'll get there.

(It's hard to see, but Phineas is wearing a Biden/Harris onesie.)

jumpsuit – thredUP – $14.99

shoes – Modcloth – $19.99

turquoise ring – gift from Grandma

TOTAL: $34.98

Here's the second jumpsuit already! It's nothing fancy; it's a Target brand. But I found it on thredUP (the gigantic online thrift store) and bought it. And it's a dream - pockets and all. I wore it to work at the library, and a little girl told me I look like Princess Jasmine.

cardigan – thredup – $12.60 (30% off first purchase)

jeans – Poshmark/H&M – $17

booties – DSW – FREE! (was $80, had coupons/discounts)

dire wolf bracelet – Etsy – about $5 for supplies

TOTAL: $34.60

This long cardigan thingy is me stepping outside my comfort zone and loving it. It's not something I typically would have chosen, but I love anything red and anything with embroidery. So here we are. My jeans AND shoes are also embroidered, so we might be facing embroidery overload. If there even is such a thing. My bracelet is a dire wolf. I took a Buzzfeed quiz that told me I belonged in House Stark. If Buzzfeed says it, it's got to be true.

sweater – Filly Flair – $16.79 (clearance + 40% off)

jeans – Poshmark – $14

Sperrys – DSW – FREE! (were $60, $100 off)

sand dollar necklace – gift from Mom/Etsy – about $3 for supplies

TOTAL: $33.79

Let me stop and take a moment to talk about Filly Flair. It is a small South Dakota-based boutique, and you know how I feel about supporting small businesses. HOWEVER. Small businesses bank on their owners being the face of the business, which is usually great. In the case of Filly Flair, I recently learned the owner is an anti-masker. That's tough for me. But I also learned she is actively working to make her brand more diverse by featuring diverse models. And that's awesome. I will continue to support this boutique because of the latter, but had it only been the former, I likely would have stopped. There's another South Dakota boutique I used to frequent with an owner who is vocally pro-Trump and anti-LGBTQ+. This is not ok, so I will be spending my money elsewhere. (Of course, this applies to ALL businesses, so I don't shop at Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-a, or Menards.) Let me descend from my soapbox.

top – Modcloth – $14.50

skirt – One Loved Babe – $19 (buy one get one 50% off)

boots – TOMS – FREE! (post office lost)

necklace – gift from Mom

TOTAL: $33.50

The most important part of this outfit is the necklace. Obviously. Mom brought over a whole bunch of vintage jewelry one day for us to go through with the intent of me listing most of it on Etsy. I found this amazing piece among the other treasures, and I was definitely not going to let it get away. It belonged to my mom in the 1970s, and it makes me feel like Cleopatra.

jumpsuit – thredUp – $12.58

shoes – Modcloth – $20.99 (additional 40% off clearance)

ring - gift

TOTAL: $33.57

Again with the jumpsuits. I hope they never go out of style again. Even if they do, you're going to have to pry my jumpsuits out of my cold, dead hands. My ring is another piece of amazing vintage jewelry. After I started listing vintage jewelry on my Etsy page, I have heard from a few people asking me I would be interested in their vintage jewelry. It was sitting around, and they did not know what to do with it. I LOVE being the vintage jewelry lady. This ring came from the latest batch, given to me by a friend. It belonged to her mom, and HOW COOL is that??

blouse – Target – $16.28 (5% off and Target Circle earnings)

pants – thredUP – $7.19

booties – DSW – FREE! (was $80, had coupons/discounts)

druzy bracelet – Etsy – about $9 for supplies

TOTAL: $32.47

This color is totally outside my comfort zone, but I think I'm into it. Palazzo pants are my new thing, and I have found a treasure trove of them on thredUP. I made this bracelet after seeing similar bracelets for sale on Etsy... for $60 on up. This was under $10. So much better.

top – Everyday and Co – $17 (warehouse final sale + 15% off)

jeans – Poshmark – FREE! (seller sale)

shoes – Modcloth – $17.99 (clearance + 40% off)

poison ring – gift from James

RBG necklace - FREE! (was $15, used Amazon cash back)

TOTAL: $34.99

One of the beautiful things about Poshmark is that it is made up of individual sellers. These sellers can decide to run all sorts of crazy sales, and this particular seller had a buy-one-get-one free sale. And that's how I ended up with these jeans. And allow me to draw attention to my ring. It's a vintage poison ring James got on Etsy. For the uninitiated, a poison ring is a ring with a container underneath the bezel that can hold poison (or whatever) to slip into your enemy's drink. Not that I keep poison (or anything) in it, but it's super cool. My amazing RBG necklace was $15 on Amazon, and I HAD to have it. I get cash back from using my Amazon store card, so I was able to use that credit and not pay a thing for this amazing necklace.

-----

That's it for this outfit session! I've already got stuff on the way to me from thredUP, so stay tuned for the next thrifty edition.
